Carers Week is a UK-wide annual awareness campaign which aims to improve the lives of carers and the people they care for. This year’s theme is Building Carer Friendly Communities and we want the whole community to not only be aware of the vital role that unpaid carers have but to also take an active role in reaching out to support them.
As the population ages and people live longer, more of us will find ourselves caring for an elderly loved one. Although caring can be both a rewarding and fulfilling experience, its effect can also have a negative impact on the carer’s health, employment, relationships etc., which in turn can have a negative effect on areas of the community such as education, health services and businesses. This is why it is so important for us to do what we can to build carer friendly communities where we can support carers to lead a happy healthy life for themselves and therefore maintain a positive contribution to the community. Research from Carers UK, a national organisation, shows that carers themselves say that ‘they want to live in communities that support them to care well and safely, that respects their caring role and helps them to become involved and consulted about the care and support of the person they care for’.
